Autumn: My new time

27/03/08  ||  Lord K Philipson

sdfbmlööööööö öööstgeb ttttttttttttttzzzzzz zzzzzö‘36ö giu53f5drftf… Wow, how’s that for an introduction? Not exactly as I planned it though… As soon as I was about to start writing the intro for this review, Melvin (that would be one of my cats) jumps up at the desk and walks over the keyboard, just to lie down to the right of me in a comfortable position, Obviously he wanted to join me in the listening experience that is “My new time”. That must be a sign that Autumn is on to something fucken good if even my cat approves. I have never seen him do that to any given, hideous New Wave of American Metal band, if you get my drift.

And they sure are on to something good…

It’s weird how I run into bands like this, female fronted half-metal bands that I end up taking a liking in, and they all seem to be hailing from the country of windmill porn: Holland. But unlike the cowardly cunts of fellow countrymen Nemesea who didn’t have the guts to answer a polite interview for GD though they agreed to, I’m sure Autumn would do one, if asked. Seriously, how the fuck would I know? Holland’s prolly full of bands consisting of nothing but assholes when I think about it. So fuck Autumn in advance, just to be safe in case I ever feel like approaching them with an interview. They deserve the coverage at GD, that’s for sure, but I can’t be arsed to ask them at the moment since I have far more important things to do. Yes, you guys, Autumn, can e-mail me now and tell me you wanna do one. Hooray!

Fuck it, as I have said before – it comes as no surprise to anyone here at GD that I have a hard penis for chick vocalists and metal combined (though saying that Autumn is “metal” would be to stress things a tad too much), you could say it’s one of my biggest passions when it comes to music even. Autumn’s not only having a chick vocalist that is good, she makes a fucken beautiful homerun with me all the time when she opens her fucken yapper as she reminds me (quite a bit too) of Kosheen’s fantastic vocalissa, and one of my personal faves, Sian Evans. Congratulations Autumn, as with tons of yer colleagues you’d be nothing without her. But now when you have her in the fucken band, let me continue with the praise you cunts deserve.

“My new time” is easy-going rock/half-metal, all based on extremely catchy vocal melodies by Nienke, clever arrangements and delicate keyboards/samples together with simple guitars backing it all up in a timely fashion. It’s like entering a restaurant, knowing it’s all good no matter what you order. The quality is high even if you decide on the potato soup. Autumn’s really got their shit together, even Stevie Wonder can see that.

As with gazillions of bands, you won’t find anything remotely groundbreaking or unique in their music, but if you are a sucker for bands following the How To Write Catchy Music 1 on 1 book, Autumn’s definitely something you could/should/must enjoy. At times you can hear a little Opeth within some of the riffage, but Autumn’s hardly having as many layers as said band, nor are they anything near that genre. I was just handing out an Opeth reference becoz I could and it actually felt ok at the time I did it. I guess that means it’s accurate (and it is, just listen to the beginning of “State of mind”). Yay me.

There’s no need to further analyze (yeah, coz I have really been analyzing shit here… taxi!) what Autumn’s doing, it’s not too difficult to understand; it’s all well composed and executed rock/half-metal with some astonishing vocals. Definitely one easy nut to (smoke) crack (to). The bottomline is: I dig Autumn alot, this is exactly the kind of shit I find myself swinging my cock to. But let’s not forget, I’d probably hate this band if it wasn’t for the excellent vocals. Thank you, Nienke. The guys in the band better take care of you, and I don’t even mean that in any sexual way whatsoever.

On an ending note I have to say that I went to their back catalogue after devouring this album for weeks. It definitely seems like “My new life” is the album where they managed to get all the Egyptians into the pyramid. Good thing I heard this one first then or I prolly would have missed out on a killer band since their earlier discs is far from this when it comes to quality and catchiness. “Summer’s end” is better than “When lust evokes the curse” by the way, just so you know in case you wanna check their previous albums after getting “My new time”.

8 go fuck yourselves Nemesea out of 10.

Oh, and you didn’t think I lied about Melvin in the beginning, did you? I’m glad I have proof.

Update April, 2008: Thanx to Ed Warby of Gorefest, I have now been informed that Nienke is no longer a part of the band. She is replaced by some new Dutch chick named Marjan. She better be exactly as great as Nienke or I’ll go apeshit.
